Bonfire Night: A Guide to Helping Your Dog Stay Calm and Happy🐶🐾✨

As the days shorten and the nights start to sparkle with colourful displays, we find ourselves approaching Bonfire Night.  While this event fills our skies with wonder, it often brings stress and anxiety for our beloved pets.

Understand your pets stress

Dogs have sensitive hearing and can perceive sounds much louder than humans.  Fireworks can be startling, causing panic, anxiety or fear.  Recognising the common signs of stress is the first step in helping your dog to cope and these may include

• Pacing or restlessness
• Whining or barking
• Hiding or seeking comfort
• Excessive drooling or panting

Creating a Safe Space

Start by designating a quiet area within your home where your pets can feel secure.  This safe space should be away from windows and doors to minimise the outside noise and visual stimulation.  Make this super cosy with their favourite blankets, toys and of course either lots of snuggles or a piece of your clothing.  This little den will become their sanctuary during the fireworks and aid in creating a calming environment.

Treats to the Rescue

Stock up on lots of their favourite tasty treats and engaging in playful activities can help create a distraction from the loud noises outside.  Examples of playtime can be:
